Two of the University’s LIFT: Learning Innovation for Tomorrow 2016/17 projects have been recognized at an international level. The United Nations University’s international network of centres of expertise in sustainability education has recognized the projects as ‘Flagships’ for their role in learning, research, and community engagement for sustainable development. Thread Counts – ‘Outstanding Flagship Project’ for engaging with transformative learning and research for sustainable development. Led by Margaret McDonough and the Fashion Design Team, Thread Counts brought together local businesses and creatives to promote ethical design, responsible business and impact for students and community, by establishing a learning platform for peer exchange, research development and industry partnerships, through its launch exhibition with interactive ‘maker space’ workshops at Hardwick Gallery. ‘Changing Communities, Changing Perceptions’ – ‘Acknowledged Flagship Project’ for contributing to community engagement. Led by Dr. Julia Peck, ASL in Photography, this project engaged students, staff and community partners in collaborative photography to understand the movement of people and its impacts on society. The project was an exemplar of internal collaboration and community partnership working, bringing academics and students into contact with partners such as Cheltenham Trust, Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees (CWR), the African Community Foundation (ACF), and Gloucestershire Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (GARAS).
