University accredited to new global standard

The University has now received its formal certification onto the ISO 14001: 2015 environmental management standard, following a 2 year transition overseen by Estates and Sustainability. Professor David James, as executive lead on sustainability, presented the new certificate to the team. The University was the first English HE institution to achieve this globally recognised standard and to include in scope both its operational and educational activities at all campuses. Keeping this status involves twice yearly audits through BSi as external assurance, supported by our internal monitoring through Sustainability Committee and our public Annual Sustainability Report. The new ISO 14001: 2015 standard demonstrates to partners and stakeholders that we ‘walk our talk’ on sustainability and that there is transparent ownership at senior management level across the organization. Jonathan Wye, Alex Ryan and Michael Checkley have worked to develop the University’s systems and practices to meet the new standard which is now overseen by Sustainability. As Sustainability Operations Manager, Michael Checkley has now taken over leadership of the environmental management system from Jonathan Wye and will continue to work with departments and services to maintain the registration.
