Global Goals

The University supports the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as one of the institutional signatories to the SDG Accord for the tertiary education sector.

As host of RCE Severn, our UN-recognised Regional Centre of Expertise in sustainability education, we are particularly dedicated to learning, training and capacity-building in support of the SDGs.

This section maps how impacts and activities shown in this 2021-2022 Annual Sustainability Report contribute to one of the specific target areas or performance indicators for that Goal.

The Global Goals - Zero Hunger
  • NICRE research with Landworkers’ Alliance to develop sustainable rural food systems among local micro-businesses

The Global Goals - Good health and well-being
  • Opportunities for students to get involved in nature-based wellbeing and gardening activities through our student-led Live Smart initiative
  • Health and wellbeing promotion for students through Student Minds mental health charter and for staff with Healthy Workplaces award
The Global Goals - Quality Education
  • New Sustainability Strategy with goal of 100% integration of Education for Sustainability across our curriculum to reach all learners

  • Delivery of Education for Sustainability in courses to equip learners with sustainability knowledge and skills relevant to their specialism

  • Sustainability action research projects with European schools and linked publication on sustainability competence development

  • Sanctuary Scholarships made available for students of vulnerable status from developing countries to improve access to education

  • Ongoing support to our Decolonising Learning initiative recognising the role of culture in achieving sustainable and equitable development

  • Commitment to national ‘Can’t Buy My Silence’ campaign to better protect people experiencing sexual harassment and misconduct

The Global Goals - Affordable and clean energy
  • £4.5m project funding for energy efficiency improvements across our estate including new City Campus refurbishment in Gloucester

The Global Goals - Industry, innovation and infrastructure
  • £4.5m project funding for heating replacements to upgrade gas boilers to heat pumps at Francis Close Hall and Oxstalls campuses:

  • Urban Greening research with Cheltenham Zero initiative to improve biodiversity planning and delivery in local urban spaces

  • New Sustainability Strategy with environmental management targets reset to achieve further improvements on use of natural resources
  • Green Gown Highly Commended award for sustainability reporting and development of new digital sustainability report
  • Live Smart student programme producing communications and raising awareness of sustainable lifestyles in harmony with nature
The Global Goals - Climate action
  • Achievement of 90/100 ‘Leading the Way’ status in the UK Carbon Targets assessment run by Students Organising for Sustainability UK

  • University-wide sustainability learning and engagement programme to educate and raise awareness on climate change and ecological damage

  • Collaborative events with local and regional partners to share knowledge and support delivery on ‘net zero’ carbon emissions

The Global Goals - Life on land
  • Student-led initiative with Woodland Trust to plant 105 native tree species at Park and Oxstalls campuses to improve biodiversity

The Global Goals - Peace and justice, strong institutions
  • New University Strategic Plan with Sustainability as 1 of 4 cross-cutting strategic ambitions to increase our whole-system sustainability impact
  • Achievement of Fairtrade University status under new accreditation with Fairtrade Foundation and SOS-UK through student-led audit
  • New Sustainability Strategy carbon emissions targets aligned with commitment to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2030
